Methodology of Telephone Counseling for Suicide Prevention
Lee Kwang-Ja

Abstract
The Purpose of this review is to provide the telephone counseling techniques of a therapist skilled in suicide prevention. Each year suicide accounts for more than 26.0 deaths per 100,000 population in the Korea, which makes it a leading cause of death. It ranks fourth as a cause of death for Korean. Despite the multiplicity of causes and patterns, suicidal behavior can usually be related to three primary motivations : loss of communication, ambivalence about life and death, and the effects of suicidal behavior on significant others. Crisis hot lines, initially established by professionals and community leaders, rely heavily upon the nonprofessional volunteer for their 24-hour-day, 7-day-week services. These hot lines seem to have originated in both the traditional and counterculture models of crisis intervention.
